After painting this picture it occurred to me that "Ruby Throat" is appropriate description for both the hummingbird and the hibiscus. How neat is that.
As an artist I have MINIMAL control over the outcome of the painting. The best I can do is begin with a concept and guide the paint in the natural course it wants to take. Occasionally something awesome develops right before your eyes. I am so surprised at the luminance of this painting. I would love to take the credit for it. But in the end I have to give it all to God. He guides the [...]

I've been to the St. Louis Zoo a few times. I've always been fascinated by the variety of wild fowl you can see around the lakes. One of our subscribers visited earlier this summer and sent me a photo to work from. The photo had many more flamingos in it, but I felt it would read better if I removed a few to reduce clutter. One of the big challenges was getting the birds to contrast with the background. The pink against the pale green water just didn't stand out like I thought it should.

I have long wanted to paint this picture. I photographed this scene about 6:30 in the morning while I was waiting for the first ferry to Mackinac Island. The water so still. The sun breaking the horizon.

Drive the back roads among the farm fields of Southern Illinois during the months of July and August. Among the dust covered weeds that line the road ditches you will find these stunningly beautiful wild hibiscus flowers everywhere. They come in a variety of shades from very soft pastel pink, to some with a slight bluish cast to those that are brilliant white. They are indeed gorgeous as well as delicate. It doesn't take long for the wind and weather to damage this lily among the thorns.

Pike's Peak is labeled one of the most beautiful places in America. In this painting we can tell it certainly is majestic. The swirling clouds against the beautiful mountains in various shades of blue-green. In the center you can see a brilliant blue lake. What a gorgeous place!
My son visited this landmark this summer and this was created from a photo taken the day they were there.

Standing in line, waiting to enter the church for a wedding on a recent Sunday afternoon, I was captivated by the colors streaming through this stained glass window. I snapped a quick photo with my blackberry. After reviewing it on my computer I new I had something that would be challenging to paint. The rippled glass was probably the biggest difficulty. I love exploring new ways of painting. Once in a while you come across something that is different from anything you've ever painted and it forces you to rethink how you paint.

I love Appalachia. So many beautiful scenes to paint. Even in what appears to be dilapidated. For the artist there is tremendous appeal in rustic architecture. Sagging roofs. Unpainted wooden siding. Old gas pumps. All these things combine to make an interesting subject to paint. I particularly like the vertical shaft of sunlight cutting across the front of this old store building in Burke's Garden, Virginia.

Nowhere in the US can you find storm clouds like the ones you can find in the plains states. The impetus for this painting is a photo taken by one of my sons co-workers. These massive thunderheads simply dwarf anything around them. The cloud retains it's basic original shape. Because Kansas is an agricultural area I thought it appropriate to place the viewer in front of a soybean field as they watch this massive storm approaching.

Big. Bold. Bright. Colorful. Just a few words that describe this over-the-fireplace watercolor. You will notice this is not a new painting. Until now, it has been part of my private collection that has decorated my home. I felt it was time to release it for public purchase and fill it's spot on my wall with something different. This is a great opportunity for the buyer who loves tulips. Almost every color in the rainbow can be found within the border of this painting.

The everyday item can be beautiful if viewed at just the right time. The sun climbing above the horizon illuminated the concrete silos and bathed them in shades of pink, blue and orange. The simplicity of the composition is what drew me to paint them.

As I traveled around south central Kansas I noticed many silos just like this one.
Terra Cotta in color, without tops. A small rail lined the upper end of the silo. I am assuming that these silos never had a domed top on them and the rail is to walk the top. I'd welcome any information you may have on these.
This one resided in an unharvested bean field.
